Using Meescan Universal Reader app

Background:

The Meescan Universal Reader app allows you to submit samples of your RFID item tags and patron codes without having to physically ship samples. The app uses NFC technology, so it requires an iPhone or Android device with a built-in NFC reader (iPhone 7 and newer / Google Nexus S and newer).

The iOS and Android versions of the app are very similar, so for brevity only the iOS directions are included here.

Step 1: Download the app

Search the App Store or Play Store for the Meescan Universal Reader app.

You can also scan this QR code with your camera to download the app:

Step 2: Start the scanning session

Enter your library code on the initial screen and tap ‘Next.’

Your library code is an 8-digit number that identifies your library to Meescan. Please let us know if you don’t know your library code and we’ll send it to you.

Step 3: Choose your device type

The device type is the source you will use to scan with.

Select "Scan RFID Item Tag Sample" to use the phone's built-in RFID scanner to take a snapshot of the data stored on your library RFID labels.

Select "Read Data From Patron Card Reader" when you are close to a kiosk that is equipped with a patron card reader and you would like to send us the data that is being red from your patron credential.

Step 4a: Scanning RFID tag samples

Tap the ‘Scan’ button, then scan the tag with your phone. The NFC reader is in the top of your phone so move your phone over the tag until the message indicates a successful scan. Meescan Universal Reader can only read one tag at a time so if you have multiple tags, please keep them separate.

When the tag is scanned, tap the ‘Next’ button (continue to step 4).

Provide additional details

Our engineers need to make sure that the data we read from the tag is decoded correctly by our devices. Please provide details of the item associated with this tag.

Item Code will be compared with the decoded tag content to confirm correct decoding. The Comments field can be used to provide additional details. For example, if the item is part of a collection, you may provide us with the collection size and the item’s number in the collection. If you’ve had different tag formats over the years and you’re providing multiple samples to us, you may use this field to identify which supplier is this tag from.

Security status will allow us to understand the specific AFI codes used by your implementation for sensitized and desensitized tags.

When done, tap the "Send" button to submit the information to Meescan.
You may repeat the process for multiple samples.

Step 4b: Read data from patron card reader

Select the Bluetooth device you want to connect to from the list then scan/read your card as usual.

Note: In order to be able to connect to the reader, you must be close to the device and the Meescan app must not be running on the kiosk itself. This makes the device "available", which is indicated by a blinking blue light on the reader.

Provide additional details

Our engineers need to make sure that the data we read from the tag is decoded correctly by our devices. Please provide details of the item associated with this tag.

Patron ID will be compared with the submitted data to confirm correct decoding. The Comments field can be used to provide additional details. For example, you may use this field to identify the card type to us or any other relevant info.

When done, tap the "Send" button to submit the information to Meescan.
You may repeat the process for multiple samples.
